A: Yoga keeps that upheaval of the emotional disturbances in a state of normal state. Yoga is as I said an emotional subject, upheavals are from the emotions. We do not distinguish between the intellectual head and the intelligence of the heart. Intelligence of the heart is the emotion, intellect there is the calculation. So, all when the emotional satisfaction is there, there is no calculation. The calculation comes because of what? The emotional want. So they are connected to each other so much that’s why Yoga begins with “ citta vritti nirodahah”. He (Sage Patanjali) has not said control your brain, it starts with the control of your mind. The mind gets attached to the external objects of the world, which is sensitive, which is not permanent, which is sensual not permanent. So the mind plays a dual role. It wants to satisfy the senses of organ, organ of actions, senses of perception on one side and also wants to please its holder, the Self. So that is why the mind plays a dual role. It wants to be with the satisfying senses. It is also wants to satisfy the Self. And Patanjali has said that Yogaasana is a physical part of yoga. See the effect of asanas, he says:” this mind which plays a dual role wants to please the senses, wants to please the Self, is made to become single. So that is free from satisfying both but becomes one.” Body is universal, therefore so many organs in the body and your blood, my blood, which your country you belong to do not change. So body is universal, God has created like that, universality and individuality of the body and the individuality of the mind. So it’s the individual which makes chemical changes in the body. So asanas guide not to disturb the chemical changes but biochemistry is balanced in the body. Because the mind is quiet, so the bioenergy is quiet. So disturbances do not take place, impediments do not come at all, so obstacles do not come. It’s the mind which creates obstacles, because it brings the chemical changes in the organic body. So the asanas guide is such a way that organic body is also kept quiet like the Self is quiet, so also as I said, water is spread evenly everywhere so there is no room for upheavals. And that is known as the emotional and intellectual stability both balanced together. There is no oscillation between the brain and the heart or the heart and the brain. A single mind by the effect of asanas. They both work as a union. That is why “ tato dvandvānabhighātah”… The dual mind becomes a single mind by the effect of asanas. So the effect has been given, but today all the people speak out, this is physical yoga. So that means they have no background of the philosophy of the ” Yoga Sutras”. Patanjali just do not use the word… how to conquer impediments, natural calamities, what we get….What has happened to the body due to our habits, habituated way of cultivation of living… So problems do come. So in order to nullify that, they have given asanas and pranayama which is the external part of yoga. So that the external body is controlled, so that you can go into the internal body.
